Asking for a pay rise involves preparation. In order for the latter to be admissible, it must be justified. You should therefore consider the following elements relating to this application.
Choose the right time for this request:
- This request can only take place once a year at most.
- This may be during the annual evaluation review.
- This meeting between you and your supervisor is an opportunity to express your plans, your perspectives and your wishes.
- In the second part of this meeting, you can ask what your supervisor is planning for you in the near future and express your possible desire for an increase. Don't put too much emphasis on this wish, which is not the only purpose of this evaluation interview!
- After you get a promotion or if your salary is below the average in your area.
- After facing a permanent additional workload or a change in your responsibilities.
Your manager should be attentive to this request. If he has any major concerns or doesn't seem to be listening, you might as well postpone your request.
Ask your supervisor for a specific appointment and do not wait for the budgets to close.
After doing a study of remuneration in the market and be realistic.
Prepare his arguments:
- It is important to gather elements to measure the performance of your work. This will demonstrate the savings and added value you bring to the business.
- Ask your supervisor questions with affirmative answers (Do you recognize that my work has led to this project?)
If you refuse
If your supervisor wants a cooling-off period, which may appear to be normal, you must agree on the precise date on which to make his decision. The company's economic situation can force your supervisor to refuse. Offer other benefits (function vehicle, work time arrangement, training..)
